The €Design project establishes the basis for measuring the impact of design at the macroeconomic level

30TH OF JUNE 2014

The partners of the initiative “€Design - Measuring Design Value” presented yesterday in Brussels the results of this European project, which aims to identify and establish guidelines for measuring design as an economic factor of production and its impact on the GDP of countries and regions.

This has been achieved through providing detailed guidelines that set out and justify a new paradigm for design positioning it as a systemic economic factor of production that contributes to jobs and growth; establishing and testing three new statistical questions that enable the inclusion of design in the mainstream systems for gathering data on innovation in Europe; and creating a scoreboard tool for Europe and a wide dissemination based on evidence gathered during the life of the project.

The project results were enthusiastically received by the European Comission as well as statistics experts and the wider design promotion community at the concluding conference in Brussels.

Presentations were given at Bozar – Palais des Beaux-Arts by Bonifacio Garcia-Porras, Head of Unit, DG Enterprise and Industry at the European Commission; Isabel Roig, Director of Barcelona Design Centre and €Design project co-ordinator; Robin Edman, Managing Director of SVID, Sweden; Dr. James Moultrie, Cambridge University; Professor Eusebi Nomen, BCD’s advisor in intangible assets and Professor Severin Filek, Managing Director of designaustria.

The project guidelines, conference presentations and the scoreboard tool are available on line at www.measuringdesignvalue.eu from Monday 30th June 2014.

The €Design project has been co-financed by the European Commission, ENISA (Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism), the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy.
