The power of creative cooperation:

The 2013 Hungarian Design and Design Management Awards

30th September 2013, Budapest... This year's Hungarian Design and Design Management Awards prove that Hungary can play a key role in the "Innovation Union" that can become a reality as a result of the Europe 2020 growth strategy and other cooperations based on concepts for common prospects. The awarded and selected works are characterised by a brave, innovative mentality, a fresh approach, and were created in environments based on the cooperation of different professions, different fields.

“Sustainable, intelligent and inclusive growth is the most important aim of the Europe 2020 strategy"  – said dr. Miklós Bendzsel. "A basic element is achieving the target of investing 3% of EU GDP in R&D by 2020. We can thus create an ťInnovation UnionŤ where the possibilites of financing research and development can be created. Building upon innovation, on fresh ideas we can open up new perspectives for Hungary's creative industry, as well as for the entire economy, thus laying the foundations of increasing competitiveness and business development."

The almost 250 works competing for the 2013 Hungarian Design and Design Management Awards prove that the experts of our days – let them be designers, IT specialists, economists, marketing or communication professionals – can make marketable products and plans by cooperating with each other. The economic sphere needs the innovativeness of the creative professions and their brave approach to daring ideas, just as much as designers need the rationality, the practical knowledge and attitude of experts who have either gained experience or just starting their career in technical or economic professions. That way the innovative-economic potential of design, the moving spirit of the “Innovation Hungary" can be created.

Announced for the fifth year, the exceptionally strong works competing for the Design Management Award were a great experience for the jury, at the same time it was difficult to choose only one winner. The Award calling the attention to the importance of cooperation between the Hungarian design profession and the economic sphere was finally given to the widely popular Cserpes Cheese Workshop Ltd. In addition to their successful dairy products, the milk bars they have been opening one after the other since 2012, introduce young generations the catering culture where offering healthy, tasty food and drinks is just as natural as honest service.

To celebrate the fifth jubilee of its foundation, the earlier winners of the Design Management Award are also exhibited, as well as three additional works from 2013. In connection with this year's contestants, the jury stressed that these companies significantly differing in size, structure, and field of operation, all found it important to have a corporate image deliberately developed by experts from the fields of design, marketing and communication. Let it be the renewal of the Hungarian State Opera, one of the most traditional institutions of Hungarian culture, the work carried out by BKK (Centre for Budapest Transport) to reform Budapest's public transport in line with contemporary expectations, or the LOFFICE new generation offices of the sisters who opened the first ever coworking office in Budapest, and now operate altogether four in Budapest and one in Vienna.

Two winners were announced in the product category of the Hungarian Design Awards. DSI Inhalo is a dry salt inhalator that is a real treasure in the contemporary world of health-consciousness, in connection with which the jury stressed the elaborate design process based on the cooperation of several experts: according to their opinion the product proves that “design is not ťsimply designing the product itselfŤ, but a very complex process". Petra Földi also received a product category award for her raincoat collection that is characterised by a clear, functional design and high quality material use, as well as professional technology: the coats created for women and men deserve to make it to the fashion stores very soon.

Fun, yet intellectually playful pieces were also awarded by the jury this year. In the concept category a logical game called Faces designed by Zsanett Benedek and Dániel Lakos using the basic elements of spatial forms, more precisely triangular disks modelled by computers received an award, while the visual communication category was won by an interactive book adapting the classic tale of Little Rooster and his Diamond Halfpenny.

The latter one was made in the Techlab of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, as the result of the cooperation between the teachers and the students of the university, thus reflects the high level of Hungary's design education acclaimed Europe-wide. The exceptionally high quality of works awarded in the student category prove the same. The strength of the LightMe lamp collection inspired by stacks of wood used when setting up a fire is – according to the opinion of the jury – the completeness of its design that involves designing all the elements needed, an idea for brand-building, as well as economic packaging: so the cooperation of different fields again proved to bring good results. The DORA bicycle helmet designed by Balázs Dániel Filczer was also acknowledged in the student category. The work of the young designer makes the nowadays increasingly popular cycling safer: offers a very functional solution of high aesthetic value and simple use.

Following on the traditions of previous years, in 2013 several organisations offered special prizes for the participants of the Hungarian Design Awards. One of the special prizes of the State Secretariat for Culture of the Ministry of Human Resources was given to Anna Farkas, graphic designer for the visual communication of her Starry Light by Anagraphic lamp, the magical result of her product design experiment. The other special prize of the State Secretariat announced in the student category was awarded to two graphic image designs. Klára Balázs received it for her JAT project, the documentation material of the Attila József Plan, while Zsófia Szabó for her diploma work, the Kis Hungarikumhatározó series (literal translation: Small Hungaricum Vocab) that is an exciting novelty in the world of Hungarian souvenirs. These prizes also prove that deliberate decisions about design can be a springboard for start-ups, as well as recently launched projects.

For the special prize of the HIPAVILON Hungarian Intellectual Property Agency Nonprofit Ltd., putting a work that is ready for production into the limelight was a very important aspect. The designer of the Shin Eco Furniture family that fits well in the most recent international trends, György Gyimóthy received the prize for his elaborately developed plan that also takes production issues into consideration.

The special prize of the Hungarian Design Council was awarded to two young designers earlier studying at the Technical University of Budapest: Péter István Varga and Renáta Paunoch for their Zigza concrete bench system. By turning, mirroring, and so on, a unique, coherent group of benches can be created.
